Pioneer Games bring friendly competition to Pioneer Day

When Pioneer Day returns to Paso Robles on October 10, some of the city’s oldest traditions will be joined by a newer one: the Pioneer Games.

Now in its third year, the free competition will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Paso Robles Event Center, following a full day of Pioneer Day activities. The games bring together competitors for a series of agricultural- and ranch-inspired challenges designed to test speed, strength, teamwork and, in some cases, a good sense of humor.

The Pioneer Games were introduced during the 94th annual Pioneer Day in 2024, when more than 300 contestants and spectators turned out for the inaugural event. The idea came from Paso Robles resident Jon Fuller, who drew inspiration from games he remembered from the Antelope Valley Fair.

Fuller has also brought the concept to the California Mid-State Fair held in July, where he organizes a Farmer Olympics-style competition. The positive response received in its first year has helped pave the way for the Pioneer Games to become part of Paso Robles’ nearly century-old Pioneer Day celebration.

The first competition featured events including a Hay Hurdle Relay, Hay Loading, Hay Stealing Contest, Tug-of-War, Antique Car Potato Race, Women’s Truck & Horse Trailer Backing, Tractor Stake Race and a Crawler Tractor Pole Pending.

The games also brought a mix of competitors from throughout the community. The Paso Robles High School football team took part, while the Paso Robles Police Department helped add an element of excitement to the Hay Stealing Contest by using patrol sirens as the event’s timer.

This year, competitors will face nine events, including several returning favorites and a new Bale Wagon “Haro-Bed” Race. The lineup includes the Hay Hurdle Relay, Celebrity Tractor Tire Race, Hay Stealing Contest, Antique Car Potato Race, Women’s Truck & Horse Trailer Backing, Tug-of-War, Tractor Stake Race and Crawler Tractor Key Hole Race.

The events reflect the agricultural and ranching heritage that has long been at the heart of Pioneer Day, while giving participants a chance to put those skills to work in a lighthearted setting.

The addition of the Pioneer Games offers another way for residents to take part in the celebration — and perhaps discover a little friendly competition along the way.

The third annual Pioneer Games will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. October 10 at the Paso Robles Event Center, 2198 Riverside Ave. Admission is free.
