Downtown Atascadero was packed with delicious food, live entertainment, and community pride during the city’s 10th Annual Tamale Festival. What started as a small local gathering has grown into one of the Central Coast’s most popular events, drawing hundreds of residents and visitors to celebrate culture, food, and local businesses.

This year’s festival featured more than 100 vendors, including 23 tamale makers from across California serving up both traditional and creative flavors. A major highlight was the “Best Tamale” contest, where judges sampled more than 30 entries ranging from classic savory tamales to sweet gourmet creations. Mary’s Cuisine Catering of San Luis Obispo earned Best Overall Tamale and first place in the gourmet category, while La Luz Del Mundo of Victorville won the traditional division.

Festivalgoers also enjoyed crowd favorites like the Tamale Eating Contest, pet costume competition, mariachi music, folkloric dancing, and performances from local bands and entertainers. Charles Bourbeau praised the event for bringing the community together in a fun and meaningful way. Organizers say the beloved festival continues to grow while celebrating the culture and spirit that make Atascadero unique.
